Gérard Perse acquired Monbousquet in 1993—his first vineyard purchase in what would become a Saint-Émilion empire. Working with consultant Michel Rolland, Perse shifted the estate toward ripe, concentrated wines with firm extraction and judicious oak, pursuing the power and finesse of 1950s-60s Bordeaux. The 2000 was produced from extremely low yields of 28-30 hectoliters per hectare, aged sur lie, and bottled unfined and unfiltered. The 2000 shows spice box, herb, black currant, kirsch, espresso and toasty oak in a decidedly modern but opulent, fleshy style. Now 25+ years old, this represents Perse's visionary modernist approach in a legendary Bordeaux vintage. Expect seductive richness with long, velvety texture—considerable complexity developed through maturation. A window into early 2000s Right Bank ambition at full evolution. Perse passed in 2025, but his legacy endures.

Antonio Galloni

92 points

"Bright ruby-red. Roasted currant and black cherry scents complicated by sexy oak. At once chewy and silky in the mouth, with complex, fresh flavors of plum, redcurrant, vanilla, coffee, smoky oak and woodsy underbrush. Finishes sweet and long, with thoroughly ripe tannins. This was bottled in February of this year after 28 months in barrel; it wasn't too long ago that this wine received barely 18 months of elevage" —Stephen Tanzer

Robert Parker

93 points

"Although still youthful, I do not think the 2000 Monbousquet will develop much more complexity. It is a seductive, rich, generously endowed effort revealing plenty of spice box, herb, black currant, kirsch, espresso, and toasty oak characteristics in a decidedly modern, but opulent, fleshy style. Enjoy this endearing, long, velvety-textured St.-Emilion over the next decade." —Robert M. Parker, Jr.

More about Chateau Monbousquet

Monbousquet is where Gérard Perse's Saint-Émilion story began. The Parisian supermarket entrepreneur bought the estate in 1993, his first vineyard, and turned it into a showcase for the ripe, concentrated, unapologetically modern Right Bank style he would later bring to Château Pavie.

The property goes back to the sixteenth century, but its modern revival started after the Second World War, when the Querre family restored the neglected vines and buildings and made Monbousquet one of the best-known unclassified wines in the appellation. It lies in Saint-Sulpice-de-Faleyrens, on the flatter ground below the town of Saint-Émilion, on a mix of sand, clay and gravel rather than the famous limestone plateau, which is exactly why so much depends on the work in the vineyard and cellar. It was promoted to Grand Cru Classé in the 2006 classification.

With Michel Rolland consulting, Perse cut yields hard and raised the wine in a high proportion of new French oak, with the malolactic done in barrel. About 32 hectares are planted to roughly 60% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, and a single hectare of mostly Sauvignon Blanc and Sauvignon Gris makes a rare dry white. Perse died in 2025.

Expect plush, dark-fruited, generously oaked Saint-Émilion that is delicious young and, in good vintages, ages into something more savory and layered.

Perfect Pairings

Rich enough for braised oxtail or a dry-aged steak with marrow butter. Duck confit or a mushroom-and-beef pie also work; avoid anything delicate.

Tasting Profile

Opulent, modern-styled Saint-Émilion, now fully mature: black currant and kirsch with espresso, spice box, herbs and toasty oak that has integrated over 25 years. Full-bodied and fleshy, with a long, velvety texture, moderate acidity, and tannins that have melted almost completely away. The finish is warm, sweet-fruited and long. Drink now — decant off sediment and don't rush it.
