A Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé that shows real ambition, starting with hand-picked, hand-sorted fruit. The old fermentation cellar was rebuilt with temperature-controlled stainless-steel vats, and a new ageing cellar was added. The 32 hectares lie south-west of the town of Saint-Émilion, in Saint-Sulpice-de-Faleyrens. The soils vary from sandy and sandy-clay over iron-pan to sandy gravel, and the vines are 60% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. The work in the vineyard is careful: six-spur pruning, green harvesting and leaf thinning. That tells you the goal here is ripeness and concentration, not austerity. This is a classified growth you can actually find, and a good way to see what Right Bank ambition looks like when it's done with care.

Robert Parker

89 points

"Aromas of ripe cherries, fig jam, sweet soil tones, cloves and other warm spices introduce the 2019 Monbousquet, a medium to full-bodied, rich and concentrated wine that's broad and generous, with a muscular, fruit-driven profile underpinned by plenty of powdery, generously extracted tannin." —William Kelley

Wine Spectator

95 points

"Drips with warmed raspberry confiture, plum sauce and blackberry pâte de fruit flavors, delivering light anise, apple wood, sweet bay leaf and black tea notes along the way. The seamless, lengthy finish has very fine detail despite its heft. Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Best from 2024."

Wine Enthusiast

93 points

"The wine, from this impressive estate on the Dordogne plain, is ripe with a layer of tannins over the rich berry flavors. With its spice and aromatic generous fruits, the wine is set to develop well." —Roger Voss

More about Chateau Monbousquet

Monbousquet is where Gérard Perse's Saint-Émilion story began. The Parisian supermarket entrepreneur bought the estate in 1993, his first vineyard, and turned it into a showcase for the ripe, concentrated, unapologetically modern Right Bank style he would later bring to Château Pavie.

The property goes back to the sixteenth century, but its modern revival started after the Second World War, when the Querre family restored the neglected vines and buildings and made Monbousquet one of the best-known unclassified wines in the appellation. It lies in Saint-Sulpice-de-Faleyrens, on the flatter ground below the town of Saint-Émilion, on a mix of sand, clay and gravel rather than the famous limestone plateau, which is exactly why so much depends on the work in the vineyard and cellar. It was promoted to Grand Cru Classé in the 2006 classification.

With Michel Rolland consulting, Perse cut yields hard and raised the wine in a high proportion of new French oak, with the malolactic done in barrel. About 32 hectares are planted to roughly 60% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, and a single hectare of mostly Sauvignon Blanc and Sauvignon Gris makes a rare dry white. Perse died in 2025.

Expect plush, dark-fruited, generously oaked Saint-Émilion that is delicious young and, in good vintages, ages into something more savory and layered.

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

What has to say about this wine:

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Braised beef short ribs, roast leg of lamb with rosemary and garlic, duck breast with a cherry or blackberry sauce, or a porcini risotto finished with parmesan.

Tasting Profile

Expect the plush, Merlot-led Saint-Émilion style: ripe plum, black cherry and blackberry, with Cabernet Franc adding a fresh, slightly herbal lift and hints of spice and earth. It's typically medium- to full-bodied, with ripe, rounded tannins and balanced acidity. The finish is dry, smooth and generous, and the wine has the structure to reward some cellaring.
