Château Peyrabon is one of the quiet treasures of the Haut-Médoc, offering classic Left Bank Cabernet character without the sky-high price tags of its classified neighbors. Situated near Pauillac, Peyrabon shares the region’s prized gravelly soils, perfectly suited for ripening Cabernet Sauvignon and crafting structured, cellar-worthy reds.

The 2016 vintage—one of Bordeaux’s all-time greats—delivered wines of remarkable balance, depth, and freshness. This Peyrabon shows it beautifully: aromas of blackcurrant, graphite, cedar, and violets unfold into a medium-bodied palate with firm but polished tannins, bright acidity, and a long, savory finish.

There’s real class here—nothing flashy, just pure, old-school Médoc character tuned for both drinking now (with a decant) and aging gracefully over the next 5–10 years.

Pair with: grilled steaks, roast lamb, mushroom and lentil stew, or a classic Sunday roast.

Château Peyrabon is an unusual cru Bourgeois property with vineyards split between the appellations of Haut-Médoc and Pauillac. Founded in 1766, the Château became increasingly popular, so much so that by the late 1800s their prices rivaled those of the 1855 classified growths. Spurred on by this success, then owner Arnaud Roux sued for Peyrabon to be included as a classified estate. Sadly for him he was unsuccessful.

Purchased in 1998 by Patrick Bernard of wine merchant Millesima, the estate has grown in its renown and quality. The Haut-Médoc vineyard is larger with over 30 hectares under vine, though most of it is close to the Pauillac boundary. Grown on excellent gravelly terroir, the wine is definitely top Cru Bourgeois standard.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

"The 2016 Peyrabon has a finely detailed bouquet with blackberry, raspberry, pressed flower and mineral aromas. This exudes class. The palate is well balanced with fine grain tannin, one of the more saline Cru Bourgeois with touches of oyster shell and spice towards the poised, edgy finish. Very fine. Tasted at the Cru Bourgeois tasting in London." -Neal Martin

Robert Parker

"The 2016 Peyrabon has a feminine and pure bouquet with red cherries and wild strawberry fruit. The oak here is present but neatly interwoven with pressed flower notes developing with time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with a fleshy entry. The acidity is nicely judged, although the light structure suggests that this Haut-Médoc will probably drink earlier than many." -Neal Martin

Decanter

"Built on some serious Cabernet Sauvignon, this blend runs full throttle into rich, ripe black fruit motifs with plenty of structural support from grippy and energetic tannins that are well balanced by bright acidity, engaging textures, and a lingering finish." -Stacy Slinkard

Wine Enthusiast

WE 91
"With its high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine has a good structure and ripe, generous black-currant flavors. Its fresh character gives juiciness that contrasts with the rich fruits. It's a wine with tannins and aging potential."
