Château Potensac, located on a cool plateau in the Médoc and owned by the Delon family (also known for Leoville Las Cases and Château Nenin), represents excellent value in mature Bordeaux. The 2005 is one of the finest Potensac vintages: 41% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Cabernet Franc at 13.5% alcohol. Now 18+ years into its development, this wine shows garnet color, blackberry and raspberry aromas, and the muscular power for which the vintage is known. Drinking beautifully in its current window yet capable of aging 10-15 years further, this is exceptional mature Bordeaux value.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2005 Potensac has a light but agreeable bouquet that feels fresher than Nenin '05 (also from the Delon family). The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins. It's a little rustic in style and feels a bit leathery, needing more freshness to come through on the finish. I suspect this would have benefitted from decanting, but this bottle doesn't really bode well for the future. Tasted at the château." —Neal Martin

Robert Parker

"A superb value for Jean-Hubert Delon, the 2005 Potensac has a deep ruby/purple color, a classic bouquet of sweet red and black fruits, as well as gorgeous texture and purity. Medium-bodied and concentrated, this wine behaves like a Medoc cru classe. Moreover, it will age very well for 10-15 years. Very impressive!" —Robert M. Parker, Jr.

"Mid purplish crimson. A little vegy but well judged and VGV. Solid but just coming round." —Jancis Robinson MW

More about Chateau Potensac

Château Potensac is one of Bordeaux's great under-the-radar gems. Like any true claret, it can be classically restrained and firm in youth, but wonderfully perfumed and cooly delicious with bottle age.

The wine is made by the Delon family, who also make legendary Saint-Julien 2nd growth, Léoville Las Cases. Potensac comes from vines further north, on gravel-over-limestone hills in the Médoc appellation just beyond Saint-Estèphe.
