White Pessac-Leognan is made in tiny quantities compared to red, and this is the junior bottling from one of the appellation's most storied addresses, Chateau Pape Clement in the Bordeaux suburb of Pessac - vineyards that have been in production since the early 1300s, named for the archbishop who became Pope Clement V. The blend is 90% Sauvignon Blanc with 10% Semillon, and the winemaking is unusually elaborate for a second wine: roughly 60% fermented in French oak barrels, a further chunk in large foudres, the rest split between stainless steel and concrete eggs. That patchwork is what gives the wine texture without weighing it down, and 2019 was a warm, generous year that filled it out nicely. Now several years past the vintage, it has shed any early oak edge and drinks with real poise. Serve it cool rather than cold - around 50 degrees - so the Semillon can show.

"Composed of 35% Cabernet Sauvignon and 65% Merlot, the 2019 Clémentin de Pape Clement was harvested from the 18th of September to the 11th of October. Ninety-three percent is aging in French oak barriques, 66% new, and 7% is aging in large foudres. Deep garnet-purple in color, the nose hits the ground running with exuberant plum preserves and baked cherries scents plus wafts of raspberry leaves, wild sage, damp soil and nutmeg. Medium-bodied, the palate has plenty of character and zing with a grainy texture, oodles of freshness and a mineral-tinged finish." —Lisa Perrotti-Brown

Tasting Profile

Dried apple, lemon pith, crushed stone and a little fennel and white pepper. Medium-bodied and lightly creamy from the barrel work, with bright acidity running underneath. Dry, mineral and long.
