The Sainte-Colombe plateau is the highest point in Castillon and a direct geological extension of the Saint-Emilion limestone plateau - the same rock, a few kilometers east, at a fraction of the fame. Clos Lunelles sits on it, 8.5 hectares farmed by the Perse family of Chateau Pavie, and it is made with the same ambition: hand-picked and sorted, fermented with indigenous yeasts, five weeks on the skins, malolactic in barrel, then 18 to 24 months in oak with no fining or filtration. The blend is Merlot-led at around 80%, with the two Cabernets making up the rest. 2016 was one of Bordeaux's great recent vintages, a dry summer relieved by timely September rain, which gave wines with ripe fruit and unusually fine-grained tannins. Now a decade on, this is drinking beautifully while keeping plenty in reserve. Decant an hour ahead.

Antonio Galloni

92 points

"The 2016 Clos Lunelles is, floral, lifted and super-polished in the glass. Sweet red cherry, raspberry, pomegranate are all lifted by a hint of blood orange and floral notes that add freshness. Medium in body and pliant, with terrific balance, the Clos Lunelles has so much to offer. This is an especially refined vintage for the Clos Lunelles." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

93 points

"Deep purp-black in color, the 2016 Clos les Lunelles bursts from the glass with flamboyant black cherries preserves, black raspberries, kirsch and crème de cassis notes with touches of violets, licorice and Chinese five spice. Full, rich, concentrated and decadently fruited in the mouth, it fills the palate with exotic spice accents and a firm yet velvety frame, finishing very long and hedonic." —Lisa Perrotti-Brown

Wine Spectator

92 points

"Offers a polished, warm feel, with a layer of sweet toast notes draped gently over ripe cassis and plum reduction flavors. A swath of tobacco comes in on the finish, while the toasty element holds sway. For fans of the not-shy style. Best from 2021 through 2028."

Wine Enthusiast

90 points

"This wine was produced by the winemaking team of Château Pavie in Saint-Émilion. With layers of tannin as well as ripe black fruits, it is concentrated and very rich. With its power and intensity it is made to age. Drink this sumptuous wine from 2023."

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Steak frites, duck confit, roast leg of lamb with garlic, or a mushroom and beef ragu. Good with Comte and with aged Gouda.

Tasting Profile

Dark plum and blackcurrant with cocoa, cedar and a graphite edge from the limestone. Full-bodied and polished, with fine-grained tannins that have softened with age and firm acidity keeping it fresh. Long, savory finish.
