Perched on the limestone plateau just east of Saint-Émilion, Clos Puy Arnaud is proof that great Bordeaux doesn’t need a famous appellation. Alain Moueix farms organically and biodynamically, works with minimal sulfur, and crafts wines that are more about energy and elegance than oak and extraction.

The 2019 vintage is Merlot-led, with some Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon adding lift and edge. There’s ripe plum and black cherry at the core, but what makes it sing is the structure—bright acidity, fine tannins, and a mineral spine from the limestone soils. It’s plush without being heavy, detailed without being flashy.

Drink now with a decant, or hold for 5–8 years. A perfect pick for Right Bank fans looking for freshness over fat, or anyone who wants Bordeaux character with a modern, organic soul. Clos Puy Arnaud is one of the great under-the-radar estates of the region.

"Owned by the Valette family from Saint-Émilion, this is one of the star wines in Castillon. Along with a powerful structure and density, it has richness. Full of direct blackberry fruits and balanced acidity, the wine has great potential. Drink from 2024. Organic and biodynamic."

Tasting Profile

Dark cherry, plum, earth, and herbs with subtle tobacco notes. Medium-plus body with balanced tannins, moderate acidity, and a savory, mineral finish.

Clos Puy Arnaud has a history of winemaking dating back to the 1800's, but its purchase by Thierry Valette in 2000 marks a definitive shift for the winery that put it on the map. The name Valette might sound familiar to you, Thierry used to be joint owner of the famous Chateau Pavie before he sold it in the early 2000's, so making high quality, first growth Bordeaux was already second nature.

Thierry also envisioned something different for his new winery. He wanted his wines to have a unique character and personality, and decided this is only done with major changes starting in the vineyard. So he started working with famous biodynamic and organic vineyard expert Stéphane Derenoncourt, before eventually joining forces with Anne Calderoni, who took the estate 100% certified biodynamic in 2008.

Based in the Cotes des Castillon, Puy Arnaud boasts some of the best terroir in the region. Soils are composed of mainly limestone and clay, but they are located on the top of the Castillon plateau and the limestone there is unique. It is known as asteries, which is the hardest type of limestone found in nature.
