Not many wines let you drink 1970. Vintage Port is only declared in years the houses believe are worth the gamble, and 1970 was declared right across the Douro — cool weather at flowering cut the crop, a dry summer followed, and the wines came in tight-knit and beautifully proportioned rather than showy. Cockburn built its reputation on Douro fruit with backbone, and after fifty-six years in bottle a wine like this has traded youthful power for something far more interesting: dried fruit, spice, wood smoke and a long, sweet-savory fade. Assuming it has been properly kept, it is squarely in its window with years still ahead of it. Stand it upright for a day, decant it carefully off its heavy sediment, and then don't rush — a mature Vintage Port will keep unfolding in the glass all evening. Fortified, sweet, and completely in its element.
