By the time the 2009 vintage was harvested, Colgin’s IX Estate was already firmly established as one of the crown jewels of Pritchard Hill—a site whose combination of elevation, volcanic soils, and meticulous farming helped redefine what Napa Valley could aspire to. But IX is more than a parcel of land. It’s a philosophy: precision without austerity, grandeur without excess.

The 2009 is the kind of wine that speaks in paragraphs, not bullet points. Fifteen years on, it’s hitting a stride—still vibrant, still structured, but shedding the gloss of youth for something deeper. It doesn’t announce itself with flash. It’s quieter now, with more resonance. A blend shaped by Cabernet Sauvignon but textured by its supporting cast—Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot—all dialed to support, not distract.

It’s not just about how long it can age (it will), but how confidently it wears its age now. A wine that needs time and space—not to prove a point, but to keep revealing one.

Antonio Galloni

96 points

"Deep aromas of dark fruits, spices, smoky oak and flowers, plus a whiff of game. Utterly plush and mouth filling but not at all heavy, showing serious thickness and high-altitude density to its sweet blue and black fruit, spice and chocolate flavors. And yet this wine's floral element gives it an almost light touch, if that's possible. Some subtle soil tones reminded me of the outstanding Syrah from this site on Pritchard Hill. Finishes with substantial but noble tannins and terrific length." —Vinous

Robert Parker

97 points

"Composed of 69% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Franc and 6% Petit Verdot, the 2009 IX Estate exhibits a flowery bouquet with notes of subtle smoke, blackberries, black currants, kirsch and baking spices. Rich, deep and full-bodied, this voluptuous, sensational blend boasts an inky/purple color." —Robert Parker

Wine Spectator

94 points

"A muscle-bound effort, tight, dense and chewy, with tar, blackberry, cedar and tobacco flavors. Ends with a pleasant wall of tannins and a persistent push of flavors."

More about Colgin Cellars

Ann Colgin and her team have been making ultra-refined, age-worthy Cabernet and Syrah from the Napa hillsides for over thirty years. These aren't blockbuster wines—they're wines about precision, balance, and what happens when you actually listen to the vineyard instead of imposing your vision on it. Sourcing from exceptional hillside vineyards scattered across the valley. The wines are elegant without being thin, concentrated without being heavy. That's the goal.
