Rugiens is the vineyard Pommard gets measured against, and this is Domaine de Courcel's version with more than two decades in bottle. It is one of the two wines the family itself puts "in a class of their own in Burgundy." Their parcel covers just 1.07 hectares, facing east at mid-slope on the southern side of Pommard toward Volnay. Thin marlstone at the top of the plot gives way to deeper reddish-brown clay lower down. The founders' descendants have owned this estate for about four centuries. They farm roughly 10.5 hectares, mostly Pommard Premier Cru, and never make more than about 30,000 bottles a year. The 2001 comes from the Yves Confuron era: he has made the domaine's wines since 1996. The domaine serves its Rugiens at about 15°C, a little below room temperature. With a bottle this old, stand it upright ahead of time and decant it off any sediment.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast duck breast with cherry jus, venison loin with juniper, coq au vin, wild mushroom and thyme risotto, or a wedge of aged Comté.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Rugiens profile: blackberry and very ripe raspberry with sweet spice such as clove, in a finer, more lifted style than Pommard's usual muscle. It's typically concentrated yet elegant, with fresh acidity and firm, fine-grained tannins that soften with age as earthy, savoury notes come through. The finish is long and spicy.
