Real grand cru grower Champagne in magnum, and one of the best values we know in grand cru bubbles, now in a bottle sized for a crowd. Every grape in this Tradition comes from the Coutier family's own vines in Ambonnay, the grand cru village on the Montagne de Reims where the family has lived since 1619. Pinot Noir leads, as you'd expect in Ambonnay, but the Chardonnay has a story of its own: in 1948 Antoine Coutier's grandfather became the first vigneron in the village to plant it, and today a third of the family's nine hectares are Chardonnay, which is unusual in Pinot country. The vineyards face south and south-east, so they get a warmer microclimate, and they sit on clay-rich soils over chalky limestone. That's how Ambonnay manages to give wines both richness and freshness. Antoine, the fifth generation, has never used herbicides and began converting to organic farming in 2019. In the cellar he presses whole clusters with their stems, skips barrel fermentation and keeps the dosage low. It's a small house, making about 60,000 bottles a year, and this is the real thing at a very friendly level, so open it at the next party.

Antonio Galloni

91 points

"The NV Brut Tradition Grand Cru is stellar. Kirsch, dried flowers, spice, dried pear and mint all show a slightly burnished quality that makes me think it is best suited to near term drinking. I don't imagine ageability will be a problem, however, as most bottles will likely be long gone before that is an issue. The richness and breadth of Ambonnay Pinot are very much in evidence. There are no hard edges to this vinous, heady Champagne from Coutier. This release is 60% 2015 and 40% reserve wines. Dosage is 6 grams per liter." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

91 points

"Disgorged in October 2020 with six grams per liter dosage, the latest rendition of Coutier's NV Brut Grand Cru Tradition is based on the 2013 vintage, complemented by fully 40% reserve wines. Exhibiting notions of waxy orchard fruit, honeycomb, mint, tangerine oil and fresh pastry, it's medium to full-bodied, bright and pillowy, with tangy acids and a fleshy core of fruit. Full of flavor and character, this is a fine effort." —William Kelley

Tasting Profile

Expect a Pinot Noir-led Ambonnay grand cru profile: red apple, ripe pear and a hint of red berry, with citrus lift from the Chardonnay, light brioche notes and a chalky edge. Fermented without barrels and finished with a low dosage, it typically shows a fine, persistent mousse and generous body balanced by bright acidity, then a dry, clean finish.

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
