1994 is one of the benchmark Napa Cabernet vintages, and this is a magnum of it from one of Oakville's great hillside estates. Gustav and Naoko Dalla Valle planted 21 acres on a rocky volcanic plateau just east of the Silverado Trail, where iron-rich red soils and yields held to about a ton and a half per acre produce Cabernet of real density; Heidi Barrett made the wine in these years. The 1994 season was a long, even one - a dry, cool spring that delayed budbreak, a moderate summer, and Cabernet picked through the middle of October in fine dry weather - and it produced deeply concentrated, structured wines that have aged for decades. Magnums move slower than bottles, so this one has had the gentlest possible ride, and it comes from a private cellar. It is mature but not tired, and it will hold; the format makes it a wine for a table of six.
