Damien Laureau arrived in Savennières in 1999 from a grain-farming family near Versailles—an outsider who has become, as La Revue de Vin de France noted, "undoubtedly the future star of Savennières." L'Alliance blends younger vines from La Petite Roche and Pitrouillet on schist and sandstone soils. Certified organic since 2012, indigenous yeast fermented, minimal sulfur. Chenin Blanc from the Loire's most ageworthy appellation, at an accessible entry point. The 2020 is drinking beautifully now but will reward patience.

More about Damien Laureau

Damien Laureau came to Savennières as an outsider and has become one of the appellation's most compelling voices. He makes dry Chenin Blanc that is serious, textured and built for the long haul, and he is precise about which soil each wine comes from.

He grew up in a cereal-farming family near Versailles and came to Anjou in the mid-1990s to work with his uncle, who had pear orchards and vines in Anjou. He rented his first Savennières vines in 1999. In 2007 he bought a cellar in Épiré, added parcels including a sliver of the Roche-aux-Moines cru. Today he farms around 8.5 hectares, certified organic since 2012, and picks by hand in several passes.

The cellar is hands-off: native yeasts, long lees contact without stirring, no new oak, and aging in barrel or tank depending on the wine. What makes the range interesting is how Damien splits it by soil. Les Genêts comes from sandier ground and is the earlier-drinking cuvée. Le Bel Ouvrage, from schist and volcanic rhyolite, is firmer and longer-lived. L'Alliance brings together younger vines. If you've been told Savennières needs a decade in the cellar, Les Genêts is a delicious argument otherwise, and Bel Ouvrage shows you why patience pays off.
