Pinot Noir from the Mosel — and not as a curiosity, but from Dhroner Hofberg, a Grosse Lage site in a side valley near Neumagen-Dhron that made its name with Riesling. Daniel Twardowski's whole argument is that the slate there is just as good a home for Pinot: he has declared his Hofberg holdings a Riesling-free zone and grows nothing but Spätburgunder there. The site is steep to very steep and constantly ventilated by cool wind coming off the Hunsrück, which is exactly the kind of place that keeps red-fruit aromatics taut rather than jammy. Twardowski says outright that he isn't interested in making a me-too Burgundy — he wants the filigree of slate-grown Riesling and the easy drinkability of Rhône Syrah to show up in a Pinot glass. Everything is worked by hand, at yields low enough to be slightly unreasonable. For anyone who thinks they know what German Pinot tastes like, this is the bottle that reopens the question.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast duck breast with cherries, mushroom risotto, coq au vin, seared salmon with lentils, or a plate of charcuterie and aged Comté.

Tasting Profile

Dry and medium-bodied, built more on lift than weight. Red cherry and cranberry fruit with a savory, spicy edge from the slate, plus some earth and dried herbs. Bright acidity, fine and fairly light tannins, and a long, stony finish that stays more mineral than fruity.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
