By all accounts, this wine shouldn't be here — not in New York, maybe not even in Aosta. Danilo Thomain farms just 2.5 acres of brutally steep terraces inside the Enfer d'Arvier amphitheater, a sun-blasted bowl of vines (the name means "Hell of Arvier") perched above the Dora Baltea river at roughly 2,200-2,600 feet (680-800 meters). He's effectively the lone independent voice in this tiny Alpine DOC. Petit Rouge leads the blend, rounded out with a touch of Pinot Noir, Gamay, and Gamaret, all hand-carried down the hill, spontaneously fermented in steel and fiberglass, and aged in his basement two stories underground. The result is an Alpine red that's deep but weightless, threaded with black raspberry, plum skin, wild herbs, and crushed mountain stone — exactly the kind of wine that explains why people fall hard for the Valle d'Aosta.

More about Danilo Thomain

Why is Hell supposed to be hot? Was it Dante’s idea? Nope, the language certainly predates him. But don't worry, We're not doing a dive deep into religion, history and language today, the important thing to know is that Hell, or Inferno or Enfer is synonymous with heat. The words are basically interchangeable.

So it’s not surprising that places that get a surprising amount of sun in Europe often carry some version of Hell in their names. Also, these same places happen to be good places to get wine grapes perfectly ripe. The Enfer d'Arvier DOC in Italy’s Valle d’Aoste is one of the best examples of Hell making some truly special wine.

The Enfer is a steep, amphitheatre shaped slope inside a valley high in the Italian Alps, near the borders of France and Switzerland. The shape of the slope allows for sunshine all day long, and increases temperatures in an otherwise very cold, high altitude growing site. This results in deep, well structured and savory Alpine wine.

It’s also a tiny DOC, just 5 hectares of vines are planted, almost entirely to a variety called Petit Rouge. Danilo Thomain and his family own 1 of those hectares, and as far as we know they are the only ones who export to the U.S. Indeed, because of his relationship with Neal Rosenthal, 2/3rds of their production comes here . . . a whopping 1800 bottles!

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

What Rosenthal Wine Merchant has to say about this wine:

The vineyards of the Enfer d’Arvier appellation are situated in an amphitheater-shaped site on steep slopes in a high-altitude valley, which receives ample sun. The shape of this “bowl” of vineyards effectively concentrates the heat of the sun, thus giving birth to the “hell of Arvier” moniker. Danilo Thomain is the only independent vigneron working this tiny appellation only five hectares in size. The Thomain family works one hectare of vineyards here in the shadow of Mont Blanc. A traditional wine made from the Petit Rouge grape and vinified in cuve, it has a compelling rusticity with a wild berry impression and a lively freshness on the palate.
