De Martino’s “Las Olvidadas” ("The Forgotten Ones") is part of their Old Vine Series, which highlights historic, dry-farmed vineyards in southern Chile—specifically, the Itata Valley, where vines have been grown since the 1500s. This cuvée focuses on País, Chile’s oldest cultivated grape, blended with San Francisco, a nearly extinct variety.

Sourced from a single, ungrafted head-trained vineyard planted in the early 1900s on decomposed granite soils, the wine is fermented with native yeasts in open-top vats and aged in old oak barrels, allowing full expression of site and grape.

The 2019 vintage is aromatic and vibrant, showing wild red fruit, fresh herbs, black tea, and crushed rock, with light tannins and high-toned acidity. It’s low-intervention in style—bottled with minimal sulfur and no filtration—but very clean and focused. More in the spirit of Loire Valley reds or Beaujolais Cru than modern Chilean Cabernet.

An eye-opening wine for those who think they know Chile—and a great food partner for grilled vegetables, lean meats, or mushroom dishes.

"The 2019 Field Blend Old Vine Series Las Olvidadas is a field blend of 80% País and 20% San Francisco from Huarilihue, Itata. Made with no added sulfites from grapes that were hand-pressed and 20% macerated in whole bunches. Maroon in the glass. The aromas include strawberry, kirsch, earth and cherry alongside a little stem. This has the slightly rough tannins one expects from País but delivers a flavorful aftertaste founded in sour cherry aromas." —Vinous

"There is a wild and rustic side to the 2019 Las Olvidadas Mezcla Tinta, even more noticeable in the 2020 I also tasted. It comes from their vineyard in Santa Cruz de Guarilihue where the ancient vines of País and San Francisco vines are intermixed in the field. 2019 was a dry vintage in Itata, but they managed to keep the wine at 13% alcohol and with mellow acidity. The grapes fermented together after being hand destemmed with a zaranda destemmer like the traditional Pipeño wines, without any additions. The wine was put in barrel for malolactic and 18 months of aging. It's perfumed and intriguing, light to medium-bodied and with a strong personality. 4,371 bottles and 50 magnums were filled in October 2020."

More about De Martino

Founded by Italian settlers in Maipo in 1934, De Martino pioneered Carmenère in Chile, first labeling a wine as Carmenere in 1996. Four generations of the family have focused on sustainable agriculture and traditional fermentation techniques, sourcing grapes from multiple regions across the country. These are modern Chilean wines made with real conviction, not just for export. They prove Chile makes wines worth taking seriously.
