A 1953 vintage Armagnac, from a single year's harvest, makes a remarkable milestone bottle. It's the kind of date-stamped spirit that makes Armagnac such a rewarding category for anyone celebrating a birth year or anniversary. Delord is a natural place to find one. The house keeps vintages going back to 1900, and its oldest stocks rest in glass carboys in a room the family calls its "Paradise." The story starts in 1893 with Prosper Delord, a travelling distiller and cellar master who took his still from farm to farm, turning local white wine into Armagnac. Today Jacques and Sylvain Delord are the house's noses, tasting, selecting and blending eaux-de-vie in a line that runs back through Prosper, Gaston and Georges. Labelled Vieille Reserve, this is a bottle to open slowly with people who'll enjoy the story as much as the spirit.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic profile of a long-aged vintage Armagnac: prune, dried fig and candied orange peel over walnut, leather and the earthy, savoury rancio that only extended time in oak brings. Column-distilled Armagnac typically comes across richer and more rustic than Cognac, with a supple, mellow palate and a long, warming finish of spice, cocoa and old wood.
