This is a 1956 vintage Armagnac, which makes it about as good a 70th-birthday or anniversary bottle as you'll find. It comes from Delord, a family house in Lannepax, a village in the Bas-Armagnac part of Gascony, where four generations have grown the grapes, distilled them and aged the spirit themselves. With a bottle this old, that unbroken family line is the real draw. The house keeps its oldest vintage Armagnacs in glass carboys in a room the family calls the "Paradise." The great-grandsons, Jérôme and Sylvain, run things now. They still pick, press and ferment Ugni Blanc, Colombard, Folle Blanche and Baco separately, a few metres from the still, aiming for a low-alcohol, aromatic and slightly tart base wine that they consider ideal for distilling. Don't treat it as a trophy for the shelf: open it, pour it neat and take your time with it.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Agen prunes, plain or soaked; toasted walnuts and dried figs; a dark-chocolate and prune tart; aged Mimolette or a well-aged Comté at the end of a meal; or with a coffee after a Gascon dinner of duck confit.

Tasting Profile

Expect what long-aged Bas-Armagnac typically delivers: dried fig, prune and orange peel, with walnut, leather, cocoa and sweet spice from long years in oak. The palate is usually silky yet concentrated, more rustic and characterful than an old Cognac, with the wood softened by time and a long, warming, nutty finish.
