Hardy Wallace's MSG is California whole-cluster fun made with a winemaker's discipline. It's a field-style blend grown in the Chalone AVA, way up at 1,700-1,900 feet next to Pinnacles National Park, where huge day-to-night temperature swings and a wild mash-up of limestone, granite and volcanic soils keep everything bright. The 2019 is Mourvedre, Syrah and Grenache (plus a splash of other old-vine fruit), foot-crushed, fermented as whole clusters and raised in neutral barrel before going to bottle unfined and unfiltered. Wallace built Dirty & Rowdy on the idea that California reds can be perfumed, lower in alcohol and energetic rather than heavy, and this is the cuvee where that philosophy is easiest to taste. Pour it with a slight chill and drink it young.
