If you love Nebbiolo but have only drunk it from Piedmont, this is the bottle that shows you what the grape does in the Alps, and it's a much easier way in than most of the famous names. Dirupi's Valtellina Superiore is 100% Chiavennasca, the local name for Nebbiolo. It's grown on terraces in the Grumello and Inferno subzones at 450–600 metres, on sandy, acidic moraine soils. The name means "cliff," which gives you a fair idea of how steep these terraces are. Davide Fasolini and Pierpaolo di Franco grew up together in Sondrio, working the harvest every autumn as local kids do. After earning enology degrees in Milan, they came home and took on 18 ancient vineyard sites. The terraces are held up by hand-built stone walls, all the work is done by hand, and everything is certified organic. This is the estate's multi-vineyard bottling, and it's the natural place to start with them.

"This is Chiavennasca doing what only the alpine expression of Nebbiolo can, presenting juicy warmed berries and freshly cut herbs with a delicacy that feels almost weightless. Drying flowers add a quiet whisper before super fine tannins carry the wine home with effortless polish. The kind of bottle you open on a Tuesday and finish before dinner is ready." —Jeff Porter

"The Dirupi 2022 Valtellina Superiore opens with heady scents of Alpine hay, wild red berry, underbrush and botanical herb. Made with Nebbiolo cultivated 450-600m above sea level and aged for one year in large oak casks, the polished palate features strawberry, blood orange and star anise accompanied by taut, fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity. Drink through 2032." —Kerin O'Keefe

More about Dirupi

Dirupi is the story of two kids from Sondrio who swam against the tide. Davide Fasolini and Pierpaolo Di Franco came back to the Valtellina to make wine. The two grew up playing basketball together and later both studied winemaking at the University of Milan. They started the winery in 2004 with no family vineyards and very little money, renting a handful of small, steeply terraced plots high in the Alps.

The Valtellina is Lombardy's great mountain valley, just south of the Swiss border, where Nebbiolo (called Chiavennasca locally) grows on south-facing stone terraces so steep that everything is done by hand. Dirupi's parcels sit at roughly 400 to 650 meters, some with very old vines, and the partners learned much of their craft from the elderly growers who used to farm them. They farm organically, with several wines now certified, and the cellar is in a historic palazzo in Ponte in Valtellina.

The range climbs from the bright, juicy Rosso di Valtellina "Olé!" to a Valtellina Superiore blended from many plots, and on to single-vineyard bottlings from the Grumello and Inferno subzones. There is also a Sforzato made from partly dried grapes and a Nebbiolo sparkling rosé. Across the board, this is Alpine Nebbiolo: fresh, perfumed and lighter on its feet than Barolo, with real mountain energy.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Pizzoccheri (Valtellina's buckwheat pasta with cabbage, potato and Casera cheese), bresaola with arugula and shaved Grana, polenta taragna, braised venison, or mushroom risotto.

Tasting Profile

A dry red Nebbiolo from the mountains. Expect red fruit plus the floral and earthy notes the grape is known for, a medium body rather than a heavy one, fresh acidity, firm tannins, and a dry, savory finish.
