Dom Perignon, Champagne, 2006

Dom Pérignon calls 2006 its most technically difficult vintage, and it declared the year anyway. That says a lot about what came out of the vineyards, because this is a house that makes only vintage Champagne and skips any year that falls short of its standards. The season swung hard: an extremely hot July, then an unusually wet, cool August that brought early botrytis (rot), before summer-like heat in September dried it out and ripened the grapes further than usual. Harvest began on 11 September and ran for almost four weeks. The house links the vintage to its taste for taking risks, and the payoff is an opulent, creamy Dom with a salty sea-air finish that keeps it lively. Like every Dom Pérignon Vintage, it spent at least eight years in the cellar before release. Now well into its second decade, it's a bottle for the dinner table more than for a toast.

"A noticeably reduced nose still manages to reveal the underlying yeast characters. This is clearly very young and tight (and particularly so in mag format) as the effervescence is fine but still quite compact and the flavors are equally backward before culminating in a powerful, focused and lingering finish. This is a vintage of Dom that is indisputably built-to-age and it's going to need plenty of it as it's not really all that pleasurable at the moment. This isn't to say no pleasure but the 2006 reminds me a bit of the 1988 at the same juncture and for those among you who remember that great wine in its youth, you'll know that it was almost 20 years before it fully blossomed. I suspect that the 2006 is going to follow a similar path in its evolution which is to say that plenty of patience is going to be required before it's fully ready."

"Powerful, dense and tightly wound, the 2006 Dom Pérignon is fabulous today. To be sure, the 2006 is a broad, virile Champagne, but I find it compelling because of its phenolic depth and overall intensity. Chef de Caves Richard Geoffroy adds that August was quite cold and wet, and that ripening only happened at the very end of the growing season. Although numbers alone can never explain a wine, I find it interesting that the 2006 has more phenolics than the 2003. Readers will have to be patient, as the 2006 is easily the most reticent Dom Pérignon in the years spanning 2002 and 2009. I am confident the 2006 will have its day, but in its youth, it is not especially charming or easy to drink." —Antonio Galloni

"The 2006 Dom Pérignon comes from a very rich vintage with an early ripeness that brought a lot of aromatic maturity. The white-golden prestige cuvée contains a bit more Chardonnay than Pinot Noir and opens with a deep and seductive, pretty accessible nose with intense yet fresh fruit aromas of pineapples, with peaches and tangerines. Lively and elegant on the palate, this is a full-bodied, unusually aromatic and fruity DP with a long and tension-filled expression." —Stephan Reinhardt

"Some evolution on the nose with real interest. Smells so much older than either the 2008 or the 2009. Flirtatious. Clean and fresh. Very zesty in flavour but with a lovely creamy texture."

"Yet another masterpiece created by Richard Geoffroy. Unmistakable Dom Pérignon style with unparalleled silkiness throughout the palate. The mousse is worthy of its own chapter and the elegance is striking. Nice minerality and floral notes with citrus overtones. Slightly short now, but time will fill in the small gaps in the beginning of life. This time it tasted intensely toasty and fairly close to the 1983 when I tasted that vintage for the first time at the same age as the 2004 is now."

Wine Spectator

"A graceful, minerally version, featuring rich notes of smoke, mandarin orange peel and chalk that lead to subtle accents of crème de cassis, toasted almond, espresso and star anise on the fine, creamy mousse. Seamlessly knit, with citrusy acidity leaving a mouthwatering impression on the finish."

More about Dom Perignon

The prestige cuvée of Moët & Chandon, Dom Pérignon represents champagne as aspirational object and serious wine. Each vintage is crafted separately by a dedicated team, meaning every release asks you to trust their vintage-specific choices rather than expect consistency. Expensive, yes, but these bottles carry the weight of history and unbending quality standards.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

The house's own pick is Sicilian olive oil, so try raw scallop or sea bream crudo dressed with a peppery Sicilian oil. It also goes well with butter-poached langoustine, lobster risotto, roast chicken with a crisp skin, or a plate of aged Comté.

Tasting Profile

The nose starts out bright and delicate, with flowers and fruit, then moves into candied fruit, dry hay and toast, with a hint of licorice. In the mouth it's rich and round, with a silky, creamy texture. The finish has a fine bitterness and a salty, sea-air edge.

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
