Charmes is the most seductive face of Gevrey's Grand Crus, and in Rousseau's hands it becomes one of the most coveted wines in Burgundy. Eric Rousseau and his daughter Cyrielle now co-lead this benchmark domaine, working in the same classical mode that put their name alongside DRC, Roumier, Mugnier, and Dujac: earlier picking, partial whole-cluster, gentle pigeage, and aging in traditional 228L pieces. The 2022 vintage was warm and ripe but somehow stayed beautifully balanced, and the Charmes shows it perfectly. Silky and perfumed, the fruit leans cherry and pomegranate rather than black, lifted by rose petal and a whisper of spice. The texture is fleshy yet transparent, the acidity perfectly judged. Just released and built to reward serious cellaring.

"(from a 1.47 ha holding of roughly 25+ year old vines that combines .61 ha in Charmes with .86 ha in Mazoyères; 20% new wood). Pretty, even perfumed, aromas include those of essence of red pinot fruit, anise, earth and the barest hint of wood influence. The beautifully textured, supple and rounded middleweight flavors firm up noticeably on the youthfully austere, balanced and sneaky long finale. This is really quite stylish and should age well." —Allen Meadows

Antonio Galloni

96 points

"The 2022 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru offers a mixture of red and black fruit on the nose, with rose petals and light violet scents emerging in time. Very well defined and transparent. The palate is medium-bodied with a silky smooth entry. Perfectly judged acidity, harmonious, caressing towards the sweet, slightly candied finish that lingers for 30 seconds afterward. Quintessential Charmes-Chambertin." —Neal Martin

Robert Parker

93 points

"The 2022 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is pretty, offering up aromas of sweet cherries, berries and plums mingled with notions of peonies and baking spices. Medium to full-bodied, supple and charming, with a suave, seamless core of fruit that largely conceals its powdery structuring tannins, it will offer a broad drinking window." —William Kelley

Decanter

95 points

"The 2022 Rousseau Charmes is silky and forward, with profuse aromas that are more cherry and pomegranate than black fruit, underscored by floral notes and a hint of spice. The texture is surprisingly fresh for the vintage, very silky, and fine. This wine is a blend of younger vines in Aux Charmes and older vines in Mazoyères, for 1.37 hectares in total. The wine is accessible even now and should be among the earliest-drinking wines in this cellar, yet it should also age well."

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast squab or duck breast with cherry pan sauce, mushroom risotto with truffle shavings, rare-roasted veal tenderloin, or aged Comte. The wine is fleshy enough for game but deserves a quiet table where the perfume can do its work.

Tasting Profile

Aromas of bright cherry, pomegranate, rose petal, violet, and gentle baking spice. The palate is silky, medium-bodied, and transparent, with red and black fruit woven through fine tannins and perfectly judged acidity. Long, perfumed, and built for the cellar.
