Domaine Arretxea is the benchmark producer in Irouléguy, the remote Basque appellation tucked into the western Pyrenees. Their “Hegoxuri” cuvée is a rare and age-worthy white made from a mix of local varieties: primarily Gros Manseng, Petit Manseng, and Petit Courbu, with some Irouléguy-specific strains that make this wine unique even within its category.
The 2023 vintage was grown biodynamically and fermented with native yeasts. The wine is aged in used oak barrels, with extended lees contact that gives it weight and grip without over-oaking. The result is a white that walks the line between freshness and richness: stone fruit, lemon curd, alpine herbs, and salt air, with a waxy texture and a stony, persistent finish.
This is a wine made for the table—pair it with seafood stews, roast poultry, or alpine cheeses. If you like white Rhône blends or fuller-bodied Loire whites but want something more wild and high-altitude, Hegoxuri delivers.
