A dry Jurançon with the kind of textural lift that makes you wonder why this appellation isn't more famous. Pascal Labasse has run Domaine Bellegarde since 1985, working twelve hectares outside the village of Monein in the Pyrenean foothills west of Pau; his son Maxime joined the estate in 2019. The Pierre Blanche is a single-vineyard dry cuvée, roughly 60% Petit Manseng and 40% Gros Manseng, fermented and aged in demi-muids — the small oak vessels that lend texture without overt oak flavor. The result is a Jurançon Sec with weight and savor, all citrus pith and white peach laced through with a spicy, herbal lift that the Petit Manseng provides. A serious white from one of southwest France's most distinctive corners — equal parts mountain freshness and southern warmth.

More about Bellegarde

Jurançon is one of France's great white-wine secrets, and Domaine Bellegarde makes the case for it on both sides of the dial: half its cuvées are bone-dry, half are luscious sweet wines from late-picked Petit Manseng. If you only know the appellation for dessert wine, the dry bottlings here are a revelation.

The estate sits outside Monein in the Pyrenean foothills, about twenty kilometers west of Pau. Its story has a transatlantic twist: the Labasse family left for New Orleans after phylloxera ruined the region's vineyards, and Gratien Labasse came back to buy Bellegarde in 1920. His grandson Pascal, who trained at Château La Tour Blanche in Sauternes, has run the domaine since the mid-1980s, and Pascal's son Maxime has since joined him.

The twelve or so hectares are planted to the local white grapes (Gros Manseng, Petit Manseng, Camaralet and Petit Courbu) and are certified organic. Grapes are picked by hand, the sweet wines in successive passes as the berries shrivel on the vine. Fresh, tank-raised dry wines like the Sec Énergique sit alongside richer cuvées raised in demi-muids and barrels, such as La Pierre Blanche. Expect citrus snap, spice and a saline mountain freshness throughout.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast chicken with lemon and herbs, scallops seared in brown butter, grilled fish with salsa verde, charcuterie with quince paste, or a wedge of aged Ossau-Iraty with a drizzle of black-cherry confiture.

Tasting Profile

White peach, pink grapefruit pith, candied ginger, white flower, and a savory wax-and-spice edge. Medium-bodied, lees-textured, with vibrant Pyrenean acidity, a touch of phenolic grip, and a long, citrus-and-spice finish.
