More about Domaine Bourdy

Few wineries anywhere can match Bourdy for continuity: the family's history in the Jura village of Arlay goes back to 1475, and the cellar still holds Château-Chalon made by their ancestors in the 1800s. That long view is the house style. Bourdy has never been in a hurry, and the traditional wines are raised for years in very old barrels and released when they're ready, not when the market asks.

Brothers Jean-François and Jean-Philippe Bourdy ran the estate from 1990, converting its 10 hectares to biodynamic farming in 2006 (it is Demeter certified). Jean-François's daughter Laura is now in charge, the sixteenth generation and the first woman to lead the domaine. She has kept the traditional range intact while adding a few fresher, earlier-drinking cuvées named for the family, like Cuvée Lola.

The range is a tour of everything the Jura does: Crémant, the classic Pinot Noir–Poulsard–Trousseau red, nutty, unhurried Chardonnay and Savagnin whites, Vin Jaune and Château-Chalon in their squat clavelin bottles, Vin de Paille and Macvin. Don't miss the Galant des Abbesses, a spiced aperitif made from a recipe attributed to the abbesses of Château-Chalon, with some 25 spices simmered in a copper cauldron. These are savory, dry and singular wines, and for anyone curious about the Jura's old ways, there's no better place to start.
