One of Chateauneuf-du-Pape's most underrated traditionalists, in one of the appellation's greatest modern vintages. Domaine Charvin is run by Laurent Charvin, the sixth generation of his family on the property, working roughly 8 hectares spread across three lieux-dits — Maucoil, Cabrières and L'Arnesque — in the cooler northwestern corner of the appellation near Mont-Redon (sand and galets, planted on cooler, often north-facing slopes) — a cooler, fresher site than most. The winemaking is old-school: no destemming to speak of, no new oak, concrete tanks, low intervention. 2016 was a benchmark modern CdP vintage — balanced, concentrated, built to age for decades — and nine years on, Charvin's 2016 is just stepping into its drinking window with the bulk of its life still ahead. Bright kirsch, raspberry, garrigue, peppercorn, dried lavender, warm stone. Lifted, fresh, classical, deeply Charvin. Decant or cellar.

Antonio Galloni

96 points

"Deep bright-rimmed red. An expansive, highly complex bouquet evokes ripe red fruits, candied flowers, exotic spices and minerals, and a subtle garrigue nuance emerges with aeration. Sweet, seamless and broad on the palate, offering intense Chambord, cherry pastry, star anise and candied lavender flavors that show superb delineation and back-end lift. In a distinctly suave style, as is usual for this domaine, with an added measure of richness thanks to the vintage. Round, even tannins lend gentle grip to an extremely long, red-fruit- and floral-dominated finish that shows zero rough edges." —Josh Raynolds

Decanter

95 points

"No Cuvée Spéciale produced in 2016, just one wine, fermented and aged in concrete for 21 months. Orange peel and black olives on the nose lead into a powerful, juicy, concentrated palate with real thrust. There's real detail and power, and it's all very well balanced with super-fine tannins and a saline finish. Very long and intense."

More about Domaine Charvin

Laurent Charvin represents the sixth generation of his family's Châteauneuf-du-Pape estate, and he's done something radical: converted all 28 hectares to organic. Whole-cluster fermentation goes into concrete tanks instead of barrels, letting the fruit speak without oak interference. This is Châteauneuf for people who want generosity without excess.
