Straightforward white Burgundy from the northern end of the region, where Chardonnay picks up a leaner, brighter cut than it does down in the Côte d'Or — and where the regional Bourgogne label still buys you real Burgundian character without the Chablis surcharge. This is not a wine trying to impress you, it's one trying to be poured. If you want honest, unfussy Chardonnay for a Tuesday — the sort of bottle that disappears before you've decided what to think about it — this is the shelf it lives on.

More about Domaine de Grisy

Domaine de Grisy is honest, well-made Burgundy from the Auxerrois, the overlooked corner of northern Burgundy just south of Chablis, where the value is a lot better than in the Côte d'Or. Pascal Sorin and his wife run the estate in the village of Saint-Bris-le-Vineux, where his family has made wine for around eighteen generations.

They farm roughly nine hectares organically on limestone-clay soils, mostly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The approach is low-key and hands-off: grapes are picked by hand and fermented with native yeasts, then raised in stainless steel and bottled unfined and unfiltered with only a little sulfur. There's no new oak to hide behind.

The range is short and practical: a Bourgogne Blanc and a Bourgogne Rouge. The white leans fresh, crisp and mineral, a cousin of its Chablis neighbors. The red is a light, red-fruited Pinot Noir that takes a slight chill well. Both are everyday Burgundy for people who want the real thing without paying Côte d'Or prices.
