Burghound

93 points

"Riper and more deeply pitched aromas are composed by poached plum and black raspberry liqueur scents and, once again, a violet top note. The super-sleek, intense and beautifully delineated medium weight flavors also coat the mouth with sappy dry extract on the dusty, chalky, stony and youthfully austere finale. Like the Taillepieds in its fashion, this is pretty much textbook Pézerolles." —Allen Meadows

Antonio Galloni

91 points

"The 2023 Pommard Les Pezerolles 1er Cru includes one-third whole bunch, though the stems feature prominently on the nose, combining nicely with the dark berry fruit and subtle black tea scents. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, perhaps just missing a little depth and grip on the mid-palate compared to other cuvées. Perhaps an early-drinking Pommard is in the cards." —Neal Martin

Decanter

95 points

"Fragrant and spicy, the forward plummy fruit aromas of de Montille's Pommard Pézerolles are invitingly moreish. The texture is softer and less angular than Taillepieds; the wine still has grip, but it is the density of fruit that is most striking. The grapes are from two parcels totalling 1.35ha. Three-quarters are from very old vines in Le Clos de Pézerolles, completely fermented as whole clusters; the balance from young vines (Les Plantes), which are destemmed. The combination marries fruit, structure, and density." —Charles Curtis, MW

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

Vineyard

Located in the northern part of the appellation, De Montille's parcel of Pézerolles sits in the middle of the 1er Cru, the most revered part of the vineyard, which was once referred to as "Le Clos des Pézerolles." Interestingly, the name is derived from the ancient word for pois-chiche (chickpea). It is assumed that these were once cultivated on this terrain.

Soil

Sandy topsoil on limestone

Viticulture

Certified organic, practicing biodynamic

Vinification

Fruit from Hubert's old clos saw 100% whole fermentation, while fruit from the middle aged vineyards was 50% whole cluster and the youngest vines were destemmed. Regarding sulfur, reds have the following: 45-65 mg/l total SO2, 20-25 mg/l free SO2.

Aging

Aged 14-18 months in barrel (30% new oak), then assembled and aged for additional months in stainless steel tank.
