Burghound

92 points

"An appealingly layered mix of poached plum, red currant and violet is complemented by the super-sleek, refined and lightly stony flavors that also possess acceptable density while displaying solid length on the moderately austere finale. This cool and restrained effort could also use more depth so a few years of keeping are recommended." —Allen Meadows

Antonio Galloni

93 points

"The 2023 Volnay Les Champans 1er Cru, which includes one-third whole cluster, has an open, transparent bouquet with red cherries, raspberries and light rose petal scents—crisp and edgy in terms of delineation. The palate is taut and fresh, a little lighter and more nimble than the previous vintage, with finer tannins and a chalky-textured finish. Classy." —Neal Martin

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

Vineyard

One of the most celebrated climats of Volnay, Champans is a steep parcel with a diversity of soils from the top to the bottom of the vineyard. The name of the vineyard is derived from two words "Champ" (field) and "pans" (old dialect for "pente" - slope).

Orientation

Optimal east-facing exposure

Soil

The top of the parcel along the D973 is chalky with a light brown soil whereas the lower section of the parcel is more clay dominant with a darker brown and red-hued soil.

Viticulture

practicing biodynamic

Vinification

50% whole cluster fermentation, 50% destemmed. Regarding sulfur, reds have the following: 45-65 mg/l total SO2, 20-25 mg/l free SO2.

Aging

Aged 14-18 months in barrel (30% new), then assembled to age additional months in stainless steel.
