Étienne de Montille's Cuvée Christiane, from a small parcel bordering La Tâche, exemplifies the producer's shift toward greater purity and refinement. This 2011 opens with perfumed red cherries, strawberry, and mineral notes, its structure refined rather than extracted. Made with about two-thirds whole-cluster fermentation and aged in 60% new oak, the wine conveys masculine elegance with fine tannins and an aloof finish that will continue to develop for years. A wine for cellaring that speaks to terroir over power.

Antonio Galloni

93 points

"Good full medium red. Dark cherry, raspberry, pungent spices, pepper and graphite minerality on the nose. Sappy and saline but less fruity and more introspective today than the "regular" Malconsorts, with nicely integrated flavors of spices, flowers and minerals currently holding the upper hand over the wine's dark fruits. Finishes with superb, slowly mounting length and dusty tannins. This serious, uncompromising, classically dry wine will need to expand in bottle and should ultimately merit a higher score." —Stephen Tanzer
