Sablet takes its name from sable — sand — and that sandy topsoil over clay and chalk is why this Côtes du Rhône Villages drinks with lift instead of heat. Jean-Marc Autran is the fourth generation at Piaugier, farming 30 ECOCERT-certified organic hectares out of the village itself, 12.5 of them in Sablet, on vines between 35 and 60 years old with yields held around 40 hl/ha. Grenache leads the blend with Syrah and a little Mourvèdre; the fruit is hand-picked parcel by parcel, fermented on natural yeasts under close temperature control, then given roughly two years in used barrel and concrete tank — unusually patient élevage for a wine at this level. Autran's real gift is blending, keeping Grenache from bullying everything else, and the result is a Southern Rhône that stays elegant and eminently drinkable.
