Delagrange's old vines sit around the geological fault line between Volnay and Pommard, where a few hundred feet can take you from Volnay's perfume and delicacy to Pommard's power — and Alexis Delagrange is increasingly interested in showing that difference rather than his own stamp. The family has been in Volnay for six going on seven generations, but 2022 was the real changing of the guard: Alexis took over from his father Didier and set about gentler fermentations, less extraction and more infusion, a little more whole cluster, and larger barrels and concrete instead of small oak. He learned from his father and also from Thomas Bouley, Olivier Lamy and Jean-Marc Vincent, and the wines have moved fast since. 2023 handed Burgundy a warm year and a generous crop, so the serious growers dropped fruit hard to keep things focused; the reds are perfumed and aromatic with more concentration than their easy charm lets on. Lovely now, with the frame to hold a decade.
