Nestled in the Loire Valley, Domaine du Bel Air’s Bourgueil Clos Nouveau 2020 is a fantastic expression of Cabernet Franc. From the Clos Nouveau vineyard, this wine reflects both the power and finesse that Bourgueil can offer, combining vibrant fruit with a grounding earthy complexity that is characteristic of the region.

The nose bursts with bright red fruit—raspberry, strawberry, and a touch of cherry—layered with herbal notes of thyme and a hint of tobacco. As it opens, earthy undertones of forest floor and graphite add depth and intrigue. On the palate, it is medium-bodied with smooth, silky tannins that provide a refined texture. The acidity is lively, offering freshness and balance to the wine’s rich fruit and subtle herbal complexity. The finish is long and elegant, with a lingering touch of minerality and soft spice that reflects the terroir.

Perfect with roasted meats, charcuterie, or a vegetable-forward dish like ratatouille, Clos Nouveau 2020 is a versatile wine that shines in both casual sipping and with food. It’s approachable now but will continue to evolve over the next few years, gaining even more complexity as it ages. A true representation of Bourgueil, this wine beautifully balances the freshness of Cabernet Franc with the earthy elegance of the Loire Valley.

"The flagship wine of Domaine du Bel Air comes from an historic 1ha walled vineyard (clos). It impresses immediately with a deeply complex and savoury nose of black cherry, smoke and black olives. The palate is equally intense, with black spicy fruit, dark plums, black pepper and a touch of raisined character. The tannins are full but not grippy or hard; the finish is long and juicy. There is no weight or excess here, just a silky profile of understated, fine fruit. Approachable now, but will be drinking very well in the next five to 15 years."

What importer Polaner Selections has to say about this wine...

Vineyard Historically the most prized vineyard in Bourgeuil, belonging to the monks at the local abbey. Located just inside the village limits of Benais where the Gauthier family live and work, Pierre jumped at the chance to restore this abandoned piece of history. Soil SImiar geology to Clos Rougeard's famed Le Bourg vineyard with thin clay topsoil over tuffeaux limestone. 70 year old vines. Viticulture Farmed organically, grapes are hand harvested. The Gauthiers have replaced the old wooden stakes with traditional slate pickets, fruit trees are vine-trained on the inner walls of the clos, and Clos Nouveau has returned to its once prestigious position in the region. Vinification Long, slow, cold fermentations of up to 30 days. Both punch downs and pump overs are performed as necessary to manage extraction of flavor and tannin. Aging Aged 24 months on the fine lees in old French oak barrels and demi-muids in a Tuffeaux underground cellar. Bottled unfiltered.
