Five generations of the Bonfils family have run this estate in the heart of Gigondas village. Eugene Bonfils founded the domaine in 1900. Rolande Beaumet (Eugene's daughter) began estate bottling in 1970, and Aline Bonfils expanded it in the early 1980s. Today, Paul Fumoso (great-great-grandson) runs the estate after taking charge in 2018. The domaine farms approximately 10 hectares in Gigondas plus holdings in Vacqueyras on 85% Grenache with Syrah and Mourvèdre. Grapes are not destemmed. Certified organic (ECOCERT).

"The full-bodied 2022 Gigondas Cuvée Tradition 1871 is a total delight. Succulent red fruits mingle with floral tones and a pinch of dried herbs. Smooth tannins and bright acidity neatly structure this silky-textured Gigondas, which culminates with a concentrated, sapid finish. Give it two more years in bottle to develop even more complexity." —Nicolas Greinacher

More about Domaine du Gour de Chaule

Gigondas doesn't play it safe, and neither does Stéphane Fumoso's domaine. Rooted in the village since 1900 when Eugène Bonfils planted the first vines, on 15 hectares facing the jagged Dentelles de Montmirail, mostly old-vine Grenache with some Syrah and Mourvèdre thrown in for tension. These are wines that smell like garrigue and taste like they've been buried in sun-baked stones for centuries—because they almost have. Rosenthal Wine Merchant brings them to the U.S., and they're worth the hunt.
