There are only two Grands Crus in all of Burgundy that carry their owner's name on the label — Romanee-Conti is one, and this is the other. The Faiveley family has owned every vine of this walled clos on the Corton hill outright since 1874, making it the estate's flagship and the only red Grand Cru on the Cote de Beaune. The 2008 arrives right as Erwan Faiveley took the winemaking reins, steering the house toward a purer, more elegant style after decades of a firmer old regime. Grown on iron-rich, marl-and-limestone soils mid-slope, it was always built with structure and patience in mind. Now roughly seventeen years on, it has arrived at its mature drinking window — a broad-shouldered, mineral Corton finally showing its cards.

"Almost invisible wood allows the lightly spiced and earthy red berry fruit aromas that are admirably pure to merge into relatively supple yet well-detailed broad-shouldered flavors that culminate in a lingering and solidly firm finish. This is unusually approachable but I expect that it will tighten up considerably after it is bottled. If so, this will definitely be a wine for the patient."

"Medium red with a palish rim. Pungent aromas of red berries, stone and flowers. Full, sweet and powerful, conveying an impression of strong extract. Very rich but very young wine with a serious underlying mineral spine." —Stephen Tanzer

Wine Spectator

"Very focused and juicy, with pretty raspberry, currant, violet and stone aromas and flavors that meld nicely with the firm structure and sleek profile. Elegant overall, with beautifully defined fruit and nice length. Best from 2013 through 2028."

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast duck, braised short ribs, or squab; game birds and earthy mushroom dishes suit its mature, savory character.

Tasting Profile

Structured and mineral, with dark red fruit softening into earth and forest-floor notes. Firm but resolving with age; broad and savory rather than showy.
