Dry Chenin Blanc from one of the Loire's biodynamic pioneers. Francois Chidaine took over his father's vines in 1989, farming organically from the early 1990s and converting to biodynamics in 1999 -- far ahead of the trend. Les Argiles comes from 40-year-old vines on clay soils in Vouvray. Whole-bunch pressed into steel, wild yeast fermentation that can take up to six months, aged 8 months on lees in large demi-muid barrels, bottled unfiltered and dry, with only a few grams of residual sugar. Demeter certified since 2003, and now farming 30 hectares with regenerative no-till practices, permanent cover crops left undisturbed between the rows. 2024 was a wet, low-sunshine year in the Loire with heavy mildew pressure and relentless work in the vines; the payoff is a taut, crisp vintage with citrus fruit and pronounced minerality.

More about Francois Chidaine

François Chidaine put Montlouis firmly back on the map of world-class Chenin Blancs. After taking over his father's four hectares in 1989, he's expanded to 30 hectares of Chenin and other regional varieties, all farmed organically and biodynamically. He ferments with only indigenous yeasts, no additives. His wines taste pure and express terroir like few Loireloads can.

The Loire Valley is France’s greatest source of value for anyone looking for elegant, terroir-driven wines. Our collection celebrates the region’s great diversity, with the mineral-driven whites of Muscadet and Sancerre, the beautiful Chenin Blancs and Cabernet Francs from villages like Vouvray and Chinon, and natural wines from everywhere in the region. Sometimes wonderfully fresh and gulpable, sometimes serious and age-worthy, the prices are always very reasonable.
