Same staggering wine — Clos Florentin, the Chave estate's historic walled Saint-Joseph from a 15th-century clos in Mauves planted to 80-year-old Syrah on decomposed granite — in 1.5L magnum format. Magnums are the right format for a wine like this: the slower oxygen exchange in a larger bottle means slower, more graceful aging, plus magnums become the centerpiece of any table they land on. Jean-Louis Chave acquired the Clos in 2009 from a family that had farmed it organically for generations and first bottled it separately in 2015. This is the estate label, not the Chave Selections négoce line. 2023 is generous and classically proportioned. Lay this magnum down for a decade-plus, then bring it out for the table that deserves it.
