Jean-Louis Chave's Saint-Joseph comes from estate vines in Mauves and Tournon — the historic heartland of the appellation, directly across the river from Hermitage. Where the grand vin demands patience, this offers the Chave style in a more immediate, accessible form: the same granite terroir and old Syrah, the same meticulous winemaking, but drinking beautifully within a few years of release. In the Northern Rhône, Saint-Joseph often plays second fiddle, but from Chave's estate vines, it's a principal instrument. A genuine insider's wine: less famous than the Hermitage, but delivering unmistakable family character.

Antonio Galloni

93 points

"Vinified with roughly 30% whole clusters, the 2023 Saint-Joseph reveals first impressions of highly fragrant orange blossom, dried violets and red cherry inflections. Midweight, round and refined, the markedly fresh 2023 can be enjoyed right out of the gate and I doubt it will ever close down." —Nicolas Greinacher

Decanter

93 points

"A tasting of the constituent parts suggests that this will be an elegant, refined style of vintage without a big tannic frame. Acidity will be softer, more lactic than a typical year. Should drink well early and isn't likely to be one of the longest-lived vintages of this cuvée." —Matt Walls

More about Domaine Jean-Louis Chave

The Chave family has been making wine since 1481—we're talking 16 generations of Hermitage mastery. Jean-Louis oversees 14.5 hectares of Syrah and white varieties, and his methods are uncompromisingly traditional: low yields, full ripeness, minimal oak, no filtering. These are Hermitages that taste like they've existed forever.
