A serious, ageworthy Syrah from Montpeyroux, one of the cooler, higher corners of the Languedoc at the foot of the Larzac plateau. Domaine l'Aigueliere's Cote Rousse is built almost entirely from Syrah on rocky slopes, made in a structured, traditional style meant for the cellar. This is a deeply mature back-vintage bottle from a private collection, now around three decades old. A wine this old is a gamble and a treasure both: expect fully resolved tannins and tertiary, savory, leathery complexity rather than fresh fruit, with bottle variation part of the adventure. For drinkers who love what time does to good Syrah.

Robert Parker

95 points

"This cuvee was bottled unfined and unfiltered, so expect some sediment to develop in the bottle. Domaine l'Aigueliere has produced two limited production luxury cuvees that are too expensive to qualify as best buys, but both are dazzling Provencal red wines. Both are 100% Syrah wines aged in 100% new oak casks, and bottled without fining or filtration. Both wines sell in the $30-$35 range. For readers wanting to pursue them, the 1995 Cote Doree is a remarkably rich, full-bodied Coteaux du Languedoc that I rated 95 points. I rated the 1995 Cote Rousse 96+. More detail will be provided in an upcoming issue. These are extremely limited in availability, but they symbolize what can be achieved in the Coteaux du Languedoc. Both wines should drink well for 10-15 years." —Robert M. Parker, Jr.

More about Domaine l'Aigueliere

The Commeyras and Teissedre families have been making wine in Languedoc's Montpeyroux since 1850 (officially founding as Domaine l'Aiguelière in 1987). On 19 hectares they pull Grenache and Syrah from limestone soils, creating wines that taste like the Midi's best-kept secret—fruit-forward but grounded, warm but not flabby. The estate produces 60,000 bottles yearly that punch above their weight. Real Languedoc done right, without pretension.
