A deep cut from France's alpine frontier. Savoie joined France only in 1860, and its wines remain largely unknown outside the region—most production is consumed by local skiers. Louis Magnin farms 8 hectares organically in Arbin, the benchmark cru for Mondeuse, an ancient grape related to Syrah. The steep, south-facing slopes with clay-limestone soils produce wines of surprising depth: dark fruit, pepper, and iron-inflected minerality. At ten years old, this 2015 should be hitting its stride. Serve slightly cool and pair with hearty mountain food—fondue, raclette, game.

More about Domaine Louis Magnin

In Savoie's Alpine Arbin, Louis Magnin tends eight hectares of Mondeuse—an underappreciated red varietal that Magnin makes taste like it deserves far more attention. Certified organic and practicing biodynamics, wild fermentation, minimal sulfur. The vineyard devotes 55% to Mondeuse, 30% to Roussanne, and 15% to Altesse and Gamay. These are wines that taste like mountains and demand food, in the best way possible. Alpine terroir given voice.

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

What Rosenthal Wine Merchant has to say about this wine:

The classic cuvée from the domaine is produced from several parcels scattered about Arbin. The grapes, harvest manually, are destemmed before crushing. The period of maceration can last for as long as 12 days with daily pigeage in the first days. The élevage is principally in stainless steel but a small percentage is left to age in older barrels. The Mondeuse “Classique” is a rustic wine with a slight smokiness to the nose, herbaceous and spicy on the palate and marked by gentle tannins in the finish.
