This is a white from a domaine whose name is built on Volnay Pinot Noir, and it comes from the Meursault Premier Cru closest in spirit to Volnay. Santenots sits north of Meursault village, right between the two communes, and it can carry the Volnay name when planted to Pinot Noir or the Meursault name when planted to Chardonnay. The d'Angervilles' 1.05-hectare parcel has been Chardonnay since 1905. That's when Sem d'Angerville planted it because he wanted to make a white Premier Cru. The soil is heavy in marl (a mix of clay and limestone), which suits both grapes, and the domaine sees the wine above all as a statement of that site's minerality. Guillaume d'Angerville and his daughter Margot run the estate today. They've farmed biodynamically since 2006 (certified in 2009) and deliberately go easy on stirring the lees in barrel, which they credit with giving the wine extra energy and tension. At a little over a hectare against 11.5 of Volnay Premier Cru, this is the small, fascinating corner of a great red-wine house, and it's well worth seeking out if you already know their Pinots.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2024 Meursault Santenots 1er Cru had just a light reduction on the nose, touches of yellow fruit and grilled hazelnuts, a minor smokiness. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, fresh and focused, perhaps just requiring a little more mineralité to come through on the finish but a step up from the previous vintage overall." —Neal Martin

More about Marquis d'Angerville

Volnay's archetypal name-producer for over a century, Marquis d'Angerville remains one of Burgundy's most consistent voices. These Pinot Noirs sit in the sweet spot between aromatic seduction and structural power—wines that open gracefully and age beautifully. The domaine's vineyard holdings represent some of Volnay's finest sites. Classic stuff, made the traditional way by people who know the terroir intimately—and it still works.

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

What has to say about this wine:

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast chicken with cream and morels, lobster with drawn butter, veal blanquette, or pan-seared scallops with brown butter and hazelnuts. Also good with an aged Comté.

Tasting Profile

The house style is dry and very fruity, with a lasting hazelnut note and a clear mineral core. The richness comes through on the finish rather than up front. Because the lees are stirred only sparingly, the wine stays taut and lively instead of soft and buttery. The domaine says it can be drunk young or kept for several years.
