Champans is the broad, generous one — the site where d'Angerville's silk picks up some flesh. The domaine's 3.98 hectares sit mid-slope in the center of the Volnay premier crus on a southeast face, rocky limestone where the soil is poorest at the top, deeper clay and stones as the slope tapers, and the combination gives one of the richest wines in a cellar otherwise known for restraint. Marquis d'Angerville is the estate that made Volnay's reputation: Sem d'Angerville faced down the négociants and began bottling at the domaine in the 1920s, and Guillaume has farmed biodynamically since 2006. In the domaine's ladder this sits well above the village Volnay and the premier cru blend, with only the walled monopole Clos des Ducs above it. 2008 was a vintage of vivid, pure red fruit and lively freshness rather than weight, which suits Champans nicely; at nearly two decades this back-vintage bottle has settled into its savory phase and is ready to pour.

"This is decidedly less elegant but actually a bit more complex with iron and earth notes adding interest to the cool red pinot fruit aromas that slide gracefully into rich and full-bodied flavors that are underpinned by quite firm and serious but ripe tannins and excellent length on the long, mouth coating and impressively intense finish. As it usually is, this is a relatively powerful wine with excellent aging potential."

"The 2008 Volnay Champans 1er Cru has a perfumed nose, just a touch of greenness perhaps, red berry fruit mixed with orange zest. The palate is medium-bodied with a crunchy texture, quite austere and linear, some hardness on the finish perhaps. You kind of miss a little flesh on the finish. I wonder if decanting might have meliorated the showing of this Champans?" —Neal Martin

Robert Parker

"Tart cherry, porcini, and game in the nose of the d’Angerville 2008 Volnay Champans lead to a sappy, bright mouthful of vivid red berries underlain by mushroom stock and following up with a saline, umami-rich, saliva-inducing finish. This has the purity and clarity, the brightness and energy that make this vintage so fascinating and appealing – at least to tasters for which these are important virtues. I suspect it will retain its energy for 10-12 years at least." —David Schildknecht

Wine Spectator

"The sweet oak dominates the delicate berry fruit in this red now, making the wine slightly angular and awkward. It's elegant and silky, however, so give it some time to integrate. Shows nice length."

More about Domaine Marquis d'Angerville

Volnay's archetypal name-producer for over a century, Marquis d'Angerville remains one of Burgundy's most consistent voices. These Pinot Noirs sit in the sweet spot between aromatic seduction and structural power—wines that open gracefully and age beautifully. The domaine's vineyard holdings represent some of Volnay's finest sites. Classic stuff, made the traditional way by people who know the terroir intimately—and it still works.
