Most people know Lafarge for Volnay (one of the village's great names, and some would say the greatest), which makes their Meursault the white Burgundy insiders look for. It comes from just one hectare of Chardonnay on clay-limestone soil, from vines planted in 1968. That gives it real vine age and a tiny production. The farming is the same as for the famous reds: certified organic and Demeter biodynamic since 2000, some plowing by horse, and chickens roaming the rows to eat pests and feed the soil. It is a village Meursault made with the same care Lafarge gives its Premiers Crus.

"A cool, pure and airy nose freely offers up its array of mostly green apple, zest and acacia blossom. There is again excellent density to the beautifully textured medium weight flavors that exhibit fine length on the saline-suffused, dry and balanced finale. This understated effort is quite good as well and worth your interest."

More about Michel Lafarge

If you ask Burgundy lovers to name the definitive Volnay grower, Lafarge is very often the first answer: an unshowy family domaine whose wines are pure, delicate and astonishingly long-lived, and a pioneer of biodynamic farming on the Côte d'Or.

The Lafarges trace their roots in Volnay to the early 19th century. Michel Lafarge's father bought the Clos du Château des Ducs, a premier cru monopole, in 1900, and the family began bottling its own wine in 1934. Michel ran the estate for some sixty years, joined by his son Frédéric from 1978, and together they converted the vineyards to biodynamics in 1996. Since Michel's death in 2020, Frédéric and his wife Chantal have run the domaine with their daughter Clothilde.

The holdings come to roughly ten to twelve hectares in around thirty parcels, mostly in Volnay, with premier crus including Clos des Chênes, Caillerets and Mitans, plus Beaune, Pommard and Meursault. Reds are fully destemmed, fermented with native yeasts and aged in mostly old barrels. Don't overlook the humbler bottlings, the Bourgogne Rouge, Passetoutgrains and Aligoté, which get the same care. Frédéric and Chantal also make Beaujolais under the Lafarge-Vial label.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast chicken with morels and cream, sole meunière, lobster or scallops in beurre blanc, gougères, aged Comté, or a mushroom and leek tart.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic village Meursault profile: ripe orchard fruit, lemon and white flowers, with the hazelnut and toasted-almond notes the appellation is known for. Typically medium-bodied and gently rounded, with fresh acidity keeping it focused, it finishes dry, long and quietly mineral. Think a rounder, nuttier cousin of Chablis.

Lafarge is one of the great names in Volnay, some would say the greatest. His wines are sought out the world over, and we are always excited when our allocation arrives.

Lafarge’s home territory is Volnay, though he also has holdings in nearby Beaune and Meursault. This is an old estate that started bottling their wines in the early 1900s. Only Armand Rousseau, the DRC, and maybe two or three other growers have that kind of history.

The wines of Lafarge are magical. Despite being made in a decidedly old-school style—really no different than a generation or even two ago—they display incredible purity and not a hint of rusticity. It is the same kind of magic that Jacky Truchot was able to conjure. We only wish we could get more.
