Clos du Château des Ducs is Lafarge's monopole — wholly owned, walled, and planted at the very heart of the village of Volnay, on a site that once belonged to the Dukes of Burgundy. To drink this wine is to drink Volnay distilled to its essence: silky, precise, and unmistakably of place. Frédéric Lafarge and daughter Clothilde bring the same biodynamic rigor and unhurried old-oak élevage to this tiny parcel as to every wine in their cellar, but the monopole status means no compromise on selection. "The 2023 Volnay Clos du Château des Ducs 1er Cru underwent a later malo and so had been racked just a fortnight before my visit. Despite that, it has an outstanding bouquet of beautifully defined blackcurrant and raspberry fruit laced with iris flowers. The palate was still a bit gassy, yet the fruit is very pure with a hint of licorice toward the finish. Great potential but I suspect it will require longer in bottle than Lafarge's other Premier Crus." —Neal Martin
