Côte de Nuits-Villages with old-vine depth. Patrice Rion sits in Premeaux-Prissey, one of the five communes whose vines can be bottled as Côte de Nuits-Villages — and his Vieilles Vignes cuvée draws on the older parcels, giving a wine with more weight and concentration than the appellation usually delivers. Patrice founded the domaine in 1990 with Michèle; son Maxime came aboard in 2005 and now runs the cellar. 2023 brought ripe, generous Côte de Nuits reds with good freshness — a vintage where the appellation tier suddenly looks very compelling. Drink over the next five to eight years; this is the kind of red Burgundy that rewards a small carafe.

"This is aromatically similar to the Bon Bâtons but with notably more spice influence. The supple, delicious and energetic medium weight flavors possess a highly seductive, even velvety, texture while displaying very good length and depth on the balanced bitter pit fruit-inflected finish." —Allen Meadows

Antonio Galloni

91 points

"The 2023 Côte de Nuits-Villages comprises two-thirds fruit purchased from Clombanchien, and the rest Domaine fruit from En Luret lieu-dit. Blackcurrant and raspberry combine nicely on the nose, not concentrated per se, yet showing decent clarity and purity. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly granular texture on the entry, lightly peppered though there are no stems in the blend. Focused and harmonious toward the finish, this is a worthy follow-up to the 2022." —Neal Martin

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Mushroom tart, roast duck with cherries, beef stew, lamb shanks braised with red wine, or a board of Burgundian cheeses. A short carafe brings out the depth.

Tasting Profile

Dark cherry, plum, a touch of cured meat, forest floor, and warm earth. Medium-bodied with old-vine concentration, dusty tannins, and a long finish that says Premeaux.
