Les Beaux Monts is a Premier Cru straddling Vosne-Romanee, and Patrice Rion's parcel sits high on the north-facing slope with a south-east turn, on shallow soil over Comblanchien limestone—vines his grandfather planted back in 1970. Vosne-Romanee is the most aristocratic address in the Cote de Nuits, and Beaux Monts delivers that combination of perfume, minerality, and tension. Rion ferments with some whole clusters and ages in a good chunk of new oak, building a wine with both lift and depth. This is arguably the most refined red in his range. The 2023 is young—cellar it or decant well ahead. A standout Vosne for the patient.

"The 2023 Vosne-Romanée Les Beaux Monts 1er Cru was completely destemmed and matured in one-third new oak. This is cohesive and focused on the nose, with neatly integrated oak and touches of iris flower infusing the black cherry fruit, as subtle bilberry scents emerge with time. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins. What I appreciate most is the texture, which is not smooth but has a little edginess. Touches of white pepper develop toward the finish, not concentrated or powerful, but very poised and persistent. I might prefer this to the 2022." —Neal Martin
