Chassagne was a red-wine village long before it became a white one, and this is the Morey family's foothold in that older history: 0.81 hectares of Pinot Noir planted in 1968 and 1978 inside Chassagne, sold as simple Bourgogne. Old vines like that on the village's two soils, deep compact clay at the Santenay end and finer limestone-flecked ground toward Puligny, give a red with far more mid-palate than the appellation suggests. Thibault Morey destems the fruit completely and ages it ten months in 228-litre barrels, 30% new and the rest second-fill, so the oak stays out of the way. 2024 was hard on Pinot Noir in the Cote de Beaune, with a cold, wet flowering costing a good share of the crop, and the wines that came through are lighter-framed, red-fruited and fresh rather than dense. Serve it with a slight chill and drink it over the next four or five years.
