Chassagne's La Romanee has nothing to do with the famous Grand Cru in Vosne: it is a premier cru perched near the top of the slope above the village, and it is the steep, stony, high-altitude one in the range. Morey-Coffinet's 0.81-hectare parcel was planted in 1957 on flinty soil with about 25% limestone, sheltered from the north wind by a stand of trees, and thin ground at that elevation gives the most classically structured white in the domaine's Chassagne lineup. Thibault Morey ages it fifteen months in 228- and 350-litre barrels, roughly a third new, and bottles it unfiltered. 2024 suits the site exactly: after a soaking spring and a summer of mildew pressure, saved by a sunny August and a dry September, the whites came in fresh, citrusy and moderate in alcohol, the sort of classical vintage growers compare to 2021 and 2008. Tension is the through-line here, and the magnum format slows everything down further: cellar it and open it for a crowd in a decade.

"From a .7 ha parcel of 50+ year old vines. Here too there is just enough post-bottling reduction to push the underlying fruit to the background but again, I doubt that it will last. There is a bit more size and weight to the bigger-bodied flavors that exude both evident minerality and obviously power on the medium dry, focused, balanced and lingering finale that isn't quite as structured. This could use better depth so a few years of keeping should help."

"The 2024 Chassagne-Montrachet La Romanée 1er Cru is another cuvée that is a tad reserved on the nose, a bit smokier with just a hint of reduction. The palate is well balanced with a bit more "cut" than the En Cailleret, though it remains conservative and linear towards the finish when you are willing it to kick on. Not bad overall though." —Neal Martin

More about Domaine Morey-Coffinet

Thibault Morey tends vineyards in Chassagne-Montrachet and across the border in Puligny-Montrachet, pulling Chardonnay from some of Burgundy's most expressive terroirs. The Premier Crus Les Combettes and Les Pucelles taste like precision and age-worthiness. Martine's Wines brings these to America as the exclusive importer. Quiet excellence from a quiet corner of Burgundy that deserves more attention than it receives.
