En Cailleret is the premier cru most often named the finest in Chassagne, and the one that comes closest to Puligny in style: refined and chalky where much of the village is broad. Morey-Coffinet farms 0.65 hectares near the top of the slope just south of the village, southeast-facing, on stony ground with almost no topsoil at all, most of it planted between 1985 and 1990 and its upper section the steepest vineyard in Chassagne. Thibault Morey raises it fifteen months in 228- and 350-litre barrels, about a third new, and bottles it unfiltered. 2024 brought near-constant rain and a summer spent fighting mildew, redeemed by a sunny August and a dry September, producing whites of moderate alcohol and real precision, a classical vintage in the mould of 2021. Cailleret's natural authority keeps that leanness from turning austere. In magnum, where the slower pace of ageing suits a vintage built on tension: open one from about 2030 onward, for a table of eight.

"From vines planted in 1983. There is just enough post-bottling reduction to push the underlying fruit to the background but I doubt that it will last. The super-sleek and gorgeously textured middle weight flavors display much more evident minerality that adds a sense of lift to the very dry but not especially austere finish that delivers excellent length. This is a lovely Cailleret that should easily repay up to a decade of keeping."

"The 2024 Chassagne-Montrachet En Cailleret 1er Cru is quite reserved on the nose, as per usual, despite rigorous coaxing. The palate is well balanced with well judged acidity but overall this is just missing some bandwidth and certainly needs more mineralité and terroir expression to manifest on the finish. Almost seems to be playing it safe." —Neal Martin

More about Domaine Morey-Coffinet

Thibault Morey tends vineyards in Chassagne-Montrachet and across the border in Puligny-Montrachet, pulling Chardonnay from some of Burgundy's most expressive terroirs. The Premier Crus Les Combettes and Les Pucelles taste like precision and age-worthiness. Martine's Wines brings these to America as the exclusive importer. Quiet excellence from a quiet corner of Burgundy that deserves more attention than it receives.
