Clos Saint-Jean is the great red site of Chassagne, on the slope above the village, and it was historically dominated by the Pillot family, one of the names in Thibault Morey's own tree, his grandmother having been Cecile Pillot. Morey-Coffinet works 0.2 hectares here, planted in 1978, southeast-facing on clay over chalky subsoil. The Pinot Noir is fully destemmed and aged fourteen to sixteen months in 228- and 350-litre barrels, 40 to 50% new, then bottled unfiltered. 2024 was a punishing year for Pinot Noir in the Cote de Beaune, with cold, wet weather at flowering cutting the crop hard, but the fruit that ripened through a sunny August and dry September made reds of freshness and lift rather than power. This is a mid-weight, red-fruited Chassagne to drink over the next eight years, and a reminder that this village made its name in red.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2024 Chassagne-Montrachet Clos St.-Jean 1er Cru (Rouge) has a little more purity on the nose compared to the Morgeot, well defined with scents of wild strawberry, red cherries and a touch of limestone. The palate is a little softer on the entry. Fine acidity, quite structured though it does feel a bit abrupt on the finish." —Neal Martin

More about Domaine Morey-Coffinet

Thibault Morey tends vineyards in Chassagne-Montrachet and across the border in Puligny-Montrachet, pulling Chardonnay from some of Burgundy's most expressive terroirs. The Premier Crus Les Combettes and Les Pucelles taste like precision and age-worthiness. Martine's Wines brings these to America as the exclusive importer. Quiet excellence from a quiet corner of Burgundy that deserves more attention than it receives.
